Green Beacons: What & Why?

Typically when we see a green flashing beacon, it is on a small car, usually a doctor or vet vehicle. The green flashing beacon indicates that the driver is responding to an emergency patient. But why are we seeing them more often on construction sites?!

Why are doctors lights green and not blue like an ambulance?

Although it might be an emergency call - the chances are the patient isn't in life threatening condition, else an ambulance would be called instead. The green beacon indicates a "call out" case but is not exempt from the rules of the road, as an ambulance is, and therefore the colour distinguishes between the two.

How do construction vehicles come into this?

In 2019, Highways England brought in a set of requirements to increase safety measures in the workplace for construction workers. With these measures also came in the use of the green beacons which are simply used to show that the operator of that particular machine is wearing their seatbelt. Not all machines require these beacons and you can see the full list published by Highways England here.
