Overmoulding: The Benefits

Component overmoulding improves functionality, reliability, aesthetics and company costs. It allows for greater design flexibility and reduces the need for additional components.

The overmoulding of cables is massively beneficial as it protects and

secures all wiring, connectors, pins and components, providing flexible strain relief and allows for multiple cable orientation, reduced labour costs and enhances the lifespan of the cable itself.

As seen in the example below, connectors that are used in industrial, commercial and agricultural settings to name a few come under great stress from extreme weathering and mechanical conditions such as hail, snow, rain, dust and corrosion.

When there is no overmoulding on these cables, the IP rating that exists on the connectors alone begins to break down over time due to the capillary effect* , allowing small amounts of residue to enter and begin to corrode the electrics. Overmoulded cables and connectors erase this issue as the resin is completely water, dust and corrosion resistant. This reduces the need to repair and replace cables, reducing costs and labour, and improves the overall quality and aesthetics of your cables.

The benefits of overmoulded cables and connectors

> Reduces mechanical stress and strain relief on both wires and terminals

> Improves the overall lifespan of all components involved

> Offers higher levels of water ingress protection than ever before

> Provides additional reinforcement, abrasion resistance and superior performance

> Ready to use solution, with plug and play capabilities

> Reduces human error and simplifies the installation process

Falconex has the in-house tooling, overmoulding machines, custom made injection moulds, 3D printing and CAD facilities to create bespoke designs tailored to our customers.

Suitability to overmould all connectors, including DIN, Deutsch and Superseal.

* The capillary effect refers to a phenomenon where an encapsulated device might be able to "pump" water through the cable it is connected to. See here for more details.
